About ICLEI
ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability was founded in 1990 by local governments at the United Nations Headquarters in New York as the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI). ICLEI is a democratically governed membership association of cities, towns, counties, metropolitan governments, and local government associations. Its headquarter is located in Toronto, Canada. Mission
ICLEI's mission is to build and serve a worldwide movement of local governments to achieve tangible improvements in global sustainability with special focus on environmental conditions through cumulative local actions.
General mandate
ICLEI shall build an active and committed municipal membership of local spheres of government (local and regional governments and authorities) as well as international, regional, national, and sub-national local government associations.
Constitution
The ICLEI Charter is the constitution or statute of the association. The current version was approved by ICLEI's membership at the Council Meeting in Athens, Greece on November 7, 2003.
Principles and values
ICLEI promotes and asks its individual Members to adopt the Earth Charter Principles to guide local action.
Bodies
- Council
The Council is the general assembly of ICLEI Members which is composed of
Full Members. ICLEI also offers Associate Membership to non-governmental organizations, research institutions, state governments and other entities. The Council meets every three years on the occasion of an ICLEI World Congress. After the founding congress in New York, USA (1990), Council meetings were held in Toronto, Canada (1993), Saitama, Japan (1995), Dessau, Germany (2000) and
Athens, Greece (2003). The Council elects the Executive Committee, approves the six-year Strategic Plan,
which is updated every three years, and receives the Triennial Report.
- Executive Committee
The Executive Committee consists of 21 elected local government representatives from all continents, the Immediate Past Chair and Immediate Past Vice Chair.
- Secretary General
The Secretary General serves as the chief executive officer of ICLEI. The Secretary General's office is at the ICLEI World Secretariat in Toronto, Canada.
- Advisory Council
The Advisory Council has been established by the Executive Committee to assist in raising funding for the Association's programs, and in the establishment of collaborative programs and relationships between the Association and other governments and institutions,
including private corporations, national and international agencies, and non-governmental organizations.

Structure

Partnerships
ICLEI has a wide range of international partners that collaborate on ICLEI's
programs and campaigns including dozens of national, regional, and
international associations of local governments. Other partners include
national governments, academic institutions, local project-specific partners
such as foundations and non-governmental organizations.
